Argh!  Of *course* the answer is that the shared text must be edited in the
Background mode.  Thought of this as soon as I went back to work.  Can't
believe I didn't think to try this before!

Sorry about the bandwidth; consider my question "canceled" (How do you canel a
message, anyway...:-))
