Summary:Trying to grok the ldef

I want to write an LDEF that will allow multiple column widths in the
same list. I've been simulating this by string concatenation, but of course
then i cannot access these 'columns' individually. Has anyone done this, or
know how to proceed? 

Basically, my problem is that the LDEF documentation in IM is too sketchy.
I have found nothing to help me in UGMP or the technotes, either.

any ideas?
