Don't rely on compression. V.32bis is a 14.4 kbps protocol now being used. You should be able to do at least 14.4 kbps. Serial interface should be 38.4 kbps capable. A low ACK/NACK with large packet capability would be great (i.e. Z-modem), with the role reversals and statistics. It would also be great to be able to use uucp interactively, in the way of a Kermit server... BETTER ERROR MESSAGES!!!! Please tell the user what really went wrong. No more NFW errors! A better UUX command. Built-in Pathalias or mail path resolution. Start with the basics interface, as well as the protocol. Efficiency and user friendliness would help just as much as speed.
