Hi There

I am currently interested in writing a program (out of interest) to compress
files, and general data.  Like methods used in packages called ZOO and ZIP.
So could anybody tell me where I could find information for writing programs 
like this or if you know something about this yourself could write me about 
some simple ways of doing this.
