The only chips that might have problems would be chips that try to operate at a higher level and have some sort of knowledge of the message protocol. It is conceivable that such a chip could not be able to send some of the new SCSI-2 messages, such as the various queue tag messages. I don't think any of the NCR chips suffer from this.
