I do not think you should limit yourself to Ethernet. The Ethernet protocol is very hardware-dependant, and will not lend itself well to radio. The KA9Q package is especially designed to to TCP/IP communications via radio. Alas, it is written for MsDos, but it seems reasonable to port it to Unix.
