The Office of Naval Research recently held (Oct 26, 1990) a workshop on real-time systems, in which every ONR grant recipient presented their results over the last few years. The proceedings summarizes ONR-funded research well, however, it may not be easy to get a hold of these proceedings (don't ask me how; I don't own one). 2. Hard Real-Time Systems, John Stankovic and Krithi Ramamritham IEEE CS Press Tutorial, ISBN 0-8186-0819-6, IEEE Catalog No. 819. $36. This is a collection of "fundamental papers" dealing with real-time systems, over the last 20 years. Its introduction, the only original part of this work, was ghost - written by dozens of leading researchers in real-time systems. It does a good job of explaining the problems that need to be addressed in real-time systems research. 3. There is is a workshop, every spring, on real-time systems, sponsored by the IEEE (I think). There is also a European Euromicro Real-Time workshop, published in June. Don W. Gillies, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Illinois 1304 W.
