For those of you wondering whether Drakken is worth playing any more,
the hint book is now available.  Unfortunately, one of the paragraphs
is:

"For those of the Amiga school of magic, Level 24 is the highest
attainable level of magical mastery; beyond that is not possilbe to
go.  Be warned; at the highest level of magical mastery, when spell
points reach their maximum, they may cease to regenerate when
used.  However, for magicians of the MS-DOS school, these
restrictions do not apply." - paragraph 7, page 10

Level 24?  Anyway, so they decided to document a bug.  Wonderful.

Turns out that I made my first mistake at the first castle.  Hope
you people do better.

And something from the Bandito in Amazing Computing (cheat ahead):

If you use the name SUPERVISOR when creating characters, F10
during game play all wounds are healed and dead characters
are resurrected.

(For those who missed it before, entering the name 31415926
after SUPERVISOR also increases your stats.)
