'fraid I can't help you on the LQP02. I had one but never used it, and sold it together with my VT180. The buyer called recently to say that something had burnt out in it. I advised her to take it to the local DEC service center. I think in your situation, your best course would be to obtain some font cartridges for you LA100. They should give you quality that is pretty close to that of a daisywheel printer. Perhaps someone here has some they would like to sell? I still have two LA50s, but since buying a LaserJet IIP, I hardly ever use them. I have another book at the printer, done using WordPerfect 5.0 on the Rainbow with output to the HPLJ. I am now getting revved up to put out a magazine for Mercedes collectors. HH> It's good to be back in touch, I hope to check in on POTOGOLD on a HH> more regular basis in the future. As I don't believe the memory Here we go again! In fact, the term 'extended memory' is, in much of the literature I read (and in particular, in the documentation with my copy of Windows/286) used for the memory between 640 k and 1024 k. Memory beyond 1024 k on an expansion board is referred to by Windows/286 as 'expanded memory'. When I tried calling the memory between 640 k and 1024 k 'expanded memory' while installing Windows on the AT&T, Windows gave me error messages. When I boot the AT&T, its internal diagnostics program tells me there are 256 k of extended memory and 128 k of shadow memory along with 640 k of base memory for a total of 1024 k. I mppeal to you again not to argue about words. If you have tried using the upper part of the memory on the Suitable Solutions board, or if you know someone who has, please tell us. Otherwise, you know no more about th subject than I do. - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Glacier Peak Rainbow, Bellevue, WA - 206/644-8431 (1:343/3.0) ------------------------------ Date: 11-01-90 (08:21) To: CARL HOUSEMAN Subject: RE: EXTENDED MEMORY ON A From: DAVID MAROUN > This is very unlikely. Both Windows/286 and the AT&T internal diagnostics program refer to the memory *between* 640 k and 1024 k as 'extended memory'. The letters are faded and uneven. I've washed the print wheel, replaced the ribbon and adjusted the paper thickness lever. I think the problem is the ribbon's fault. It's a generic brand named Qume Fabric IV. I notice the printer has two little sprocket inserts and the Qume ribbon only has one. So it seems to me that I'm only getting "one wheel drive" when I should be getting two. The printer evidently doesn't have enough power to spin the ribbon with only one sprocket doing the work. Letters print repeatedly on the same spot of the ribbon and hence the faded and uneven typed page. My question: Is my diagnosis correct? And where can I get a more appropriate ribbon for the printer? Mail order is fine, but thesis time is fast approaching and I naturally need the ribbon as of yesterday. I live in the Boston area. Are they available near here? Thanks in advance for any help. I'm afraid that if we wish to participate in fruitful conversation then we must agree on terminology. How useful would it be, for instance, if I were to adopt the convention that "memory" referred to hard disk space while others didn't? Me: "Hey, Joe, don't bother with Turbo C on your Rainbow - it takes over 1 meg of *memory*." Joe: "Geez, I guess it's impossible to run it on my Rainbow - I only have 896K installed."??? You ask whether programs which use "extended" memory are available for the SS Rambow. I reply the Rambow can not possibly have "extended" memory, that you should look instead for programs which work with some other type of memory. You can believe me or not, but as I said earlier, your search will be easier if you use the correct wording. George ------------------------------
