In my case, however, the hangs seems to come in clusters, so I wonder whether the behavior is related to the overall activity on the system. I wouldn't be surprized if there is some discrepancy in the semantics of when SIGCHLD is sent between HP-UX and BSD. Funny how I've never had problems with compile subprocesses or their relatives either.
