Do I need to pick up some NPCs? I think your party should do just fine. Make sure the fighters have the best possible ACs given the pooled equipment of the party. I generally have the mages cast Stinking Cloud on the trolls and after that, Sleep on the kobolds. Stinking Cloud has to be the best spell for taking on the higher level monsters. The computer's algorithm for fighting stinks, so NPCs are only barely useful. A Hero or two can be useful in tougher fights. On the other hand, they can sometimes get in the way. I usually run two fighters, a mage/thief, and the rest cleric/fighters or cleric/fighter/mages. Given that level advancement is halted early for clerics and mages, experience beyond the table is wasted. The extra Sleep and Cure spells also come in handy.
