In the case of the latter, there is a very effective (and very reasonably- priced) application called "Enlarge," which allows you to both increase the image size (all the way up to 16x!) AND has an "invert" function which reverses the colors on the screen (i.e., whites become black and vice versa). This latter function is great for doing long reports on Word or something like that -- the black screen with white letters is quite pleasant to look at.
