Ditto.  This is also the way Xerox's development environment works:
click to type, but the window does not come to the top.  The Mac is
particularly crippled because it has no "move window to bottom".

With click-to-type-and-bring-to-top, it is essential to include a fast
way to get rid of the window which was topped, after you finish
typing.
