I don't use 286 Unix anymore, but I've been using 16 bit compress/uncompress on DOS for years. The name of the program is comp16.arc/zip, and the source is probably compsrc.arc/zip, both available at grape.ecs.clarkson.edu (128.153.13.196). I believe the source code will compile on a Unix system, too. I have compressed/uncompressed files of at least 2 megabytes on an AT with about 550K free memory.. No problem at all. -- Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.
