I have an (old) Mitac 2400BD (exact model number unknown). When calling some HST dual standards, I can connect fine at 2400. When calling others, something in the negotiation sequence causes my modem to give up and disconnect. I can't say for sure why it works fine for some and not for others. Local/long distance doesn't seem to affect it; rather, just something different in the way the distant end is negotiating. I've tried resetting different S registers, but if that will do it I haven't found the right setting for the right one. Does anyone in net.land have an idea for me? Please email, and if I get an idea that works I'll repost to the group.
