At first, I too [...] There were a lot of really cute answers to this, but on a serious note, my understanding is that the net really heats up every September-October, because of the influx of new students starting (returning to) school. ("Hey, lookit this, a new toy! Oooh, ooh, I get to *publish articles*!!") After the novelty wears off (and semester/quarter finals begin showing on the horizon), the net calms down considerably.
