Out of curiosity - have you tried using the install program that comes
with the Andrew distribution?  If it works at all - it will also make
the problem you're running into go away - as it doesn't gratuitously
create directories upon installation.

I mention this because if you're getting burnt by makedo - chances are
that there are a number of other things being installed incorrectly on
your system (at least from the Andrew distribution).
