By comparing to Snobol, I assume that by "obsolete" you really mean "out of favor", rather than "surpassed by better designs". Snobol and MUDL were hardly the world's best general purpose languages, but they had some features that beat the snot out of more recent, more general, but less powerful (in those areas) languages, like C (and C++).
