I upgraded my 400 so long ago that I don't remember what chips I used or whether they are the same as used to upgrade the 800XL. However, I would recommend that he not even start putting money into a 400, assuming he still has the membrane keyboard on it. He will get tired of it real fast and not get much use out of it unless he only uses it to play games. He should consider buying a used machine if he wants to upgrade. I was at the Chicago/Milwaukee Atarifest Sunday and saw several 800, 800XL and 130XE's for sale in the 50 to 100 dollar range. It is cheaper in the long run.
