Does the phrase "Caveat Emptor" ring a bell? It is simply the fact that if you purchase things not knowing what you are doing then you may succeed or you may soon discover that you've been ripped off. Perhaps that lets me know not to visit auctions since I KNOW what computer equipment is worth, and I WON'T pay more than the actual value of the equipment. But I guess if everyone knew what they were doing the bankruptcy people would BE in bankruptcy from not enough bankruptcies! - --- Opus-CBCS 1.14 * Origin: Silver Bullet - Silver Spring, Md - 301-622-2247 (1:109/417.0) ------------------------------ Date: 11-12-90 (13:22) To: PETER QUIGG Subject: LQP02 RIBBONS From: HOWARD HALL Peter- The cloth (fabric) ribbons apparently use a single sprocket, while the 'one-time' ribbons use two sprockets. I have gotten excellent results with DEC LQP02-KA 535D, and with QUME 3452666, both of which are 'one-time' ribbons. Have also been satisfied with DEC LQP02-KB 429G in the 'fabric' line, though have not tried the QUME 'fabric'. If the sprocket in the mal-functioning 'fabric' cartridge moves freely manually, then it should feed properly in the printer as well. If it WON'T move freely by hand, I would suspect a faulty cartridge. Incidentally, those 'fabric' ribbons are relatively short, and will need re-inking or replacement on a rather frequent schedule. Any major computer supply store should be able to get the QUME 'one-time' tape for you in a very short time, but I wouldn't count on quick response from DEC unless you are lucky enough to have a DEC retail outlet near you. Hope this helps a bit. Power supply or somhing might be fried. I told him that the hard disk controller is probably the most valuable part, and to bring it to the next meeting and he could probably get cash for it. He also asked the perennial "how to connect an LA50 to an IBM compatible" question. I told him he could, I've done it myself, there's an article in old newsletter (current Glacier Peak board?) telling exactly how, and he'd have to make a custom cable. If he comes, someone help him out. He wants to give the printer to his daughter. Still vicariously Rainbowing thru here. Actually, my 100B is alive and well on my desk at work. Do lots of writing, a little 123'ing. My I still am looking for 123 V2, Wordperfect 4.2 if anyone has for sal Can't come Nov meeting. Spouse on vacation with mother-in-law, and I've got the kids. Maybe December. Oh:, Mr. Jones phone #: (H) 743 4788 (W) 865 6297 - --- Opus-CBCS 1.12 * Origin: Glacier Peak Rainbow, Bellevue, WA - 206/644-8431 (1:343/3.0) ------------------------------
