It's possible the original poster was referring to a DOV (Data Over
Voice) modem, which does just what the name says.  I use one regularly
at 9600 baud on my single phone line, and can use the phone for
standard conversations at the same time.  You need one at each end of
the line, and they're apparently only useful over short distances.
