A Laserwriter IInt where I work has developed a nasty problem: not
long after a new cartridge is put in, a thin strip of black appears
on ALL pages printed, along the left side of the paper.

Originally, I thought this to be a problem with the cartridge, but
installing a new toner cartridge only eliminates the problem 
temporarily.

The dark line originally averaged only about 1mm thick; it's grown
to about 1/4 inch. Rocking the toner cartridge to redistribute the
toner has no effect. Cleaning the laserwriter insides as when a new
toner cartridge is put in has no effect. Internal inspection of the
laserwriter reveals much powder toner collecting inside near the far end
of the "corona transfer wires" section.

Wiping the edges of the (glass?) roller inside the cartridge (behind the
shutter) sometimes offers temporary clean printing, but I think this 
operation is a definite no-no from a "proper handling of the toner
cartridge" standpoint.

Has anyone else experienced such a problem? Any suggestions (short of
lugging the thing in for official service)?
