In HC 1.2, I painted text onto the card graphics behind buttons I wanted to disable & dimmed them manually. When I wanted to disable a button, I just used the "hide cd button foo" command. It worked wonderfully, but it was a pain to move the background bits around if the buttons needed to be repositioned.
