Information regarding the TIFF file format can be found on
the anonymous FTP server alw.nih.gov [128.321.128.251] in the directory: 
   /pub/image

Also on alw.nih.gov is the excellent TIFF manipulation and image analysis
program "Image" by Wayne Rasband.  Image is public domain (one thousand
thank-yous to Wayne and NIH) including the source code, which may provide
useful examples.
