Floppy Fiasco ! Message-ID: <72618215MES@MSU> Date: 13 Nov 90 19:07:25 GMT Organization: Michigan State University Lines: 27 Ok, This has happened too many times, so I am going to post this hoping that it can be remedied. It has do do with the poor handling of floppies by Multifinder vs Finder. (MF used below unless noted) 1. many segments of a large .sit file (1400 k segments) 2. I copy a new version to a floppy already containing 1 1400 k segment... ("Replace ?? " yes) 3. The copy proceeds, until the last moment, and I get an error saying that the copy cannot continue due to a disk write error. 4. I try copying the file a couple of more times - same error. 5. I try a format of the floppy (under MF still) - no way 6. Try more formats under MF - no way ----- Reboot under finder ---- 7. Try format of same disk - OK! 8. Try copy of same file to same disk - OK! Damn it! This has happened for too long! Please see that the algorithms used to format floppies and copy files contained in the FINDER are duplicated in the MULTIFINDER! With system 7 having no finder, this makes me worried! And with all the reports of the floppy drive malfunctioning and poor quality floppy disks, it seems obvious what the real culprit is! (These are bulk mailorder HD floppies - system 6.0.5 - IIci) Thanks for the air time! :) Mark Sartor, 221 Ag Hall, MSU Campus, E. Lansing Mi 48823 (18215mes@msu.bitnet)
