Essentially, two things to say about it, for anybody else who is curious:

1) When one says MIPS, one might mean RMIPS, *relative* MIPS, so the MIPS
   rating does have some meaningful relationships within itself.

2) MIPS is a benchmark and should be treated as such. :-)  Total system
   throughput is what counts (I knew this already, but thought I'd empha-
   size anyway).
