On each occasion it seems to have had something to do with fonts. Indeed, using xfd on a particular font will now always allow me to very smartly exit OpenWindows :-). This particular font is, I guess quite large, being the Metafont cminch converted to the appropriate font format for OpenWindows for use with xtex (2.16.1). Not many of the other fonts that I have converted exhibit this behaviour, so I can only guess that it is the size of the font that causes the problem.
