    I seem to be unable to get Motif applications to use anything
but the default visual (the default is to inherit from parent, which for
a shell is normally the root window).

    I have tried to be very careful about matching up the correct
visuals and colormaps, etc., but eventually I get a protocol error
(e.g. "Bad Match" on creating a window, or creating a GC, etc.)  I've
even tried to make sure that I don't have any commands that make shells
for you (such as XmCreatePulldownMenu).

    Any help would be *greatly* appreciated.
