I know, I did it at TBS for a while. The Transcriber certificate is given to sighted people, while the proofreading certificate is given to blind people. You can't get a transcribers certificate, at least that was the case some time back. I guess they never considered that you could either ask a friend to look at something and describe it, or you could even use an Optacon. I wouldn't waste time on proofreading courses unless you have a real possibility of getting paid for the work. Besides I think most of the proofing these days is needed to do corrections of typists, or formatting, not real errors by the translation software, and even in that case, the list of exceptions isn't being expanded by the users to make the system not make that mistake again. If the users of the braille translation software used their brains more than their fingers they'd find that proofing is nearly uuseless. Most of the mistakes are of more a subjective nature--such as how to do the bibleography section, or how to annotate some strange word, or whatever. Anyway, have fun, and if you want more info about the proofing stuff you can call me at work at 202-535-4720 or home at 703-765-9294. Talk to you later. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!109!143.0!Al.Hoffman Internet: Al.Hoffman@p0.f143.n109.z1.fidonet.org
