An annullment is a declaration that there was no marriage in the first place, and is thus different from a divorce, which is a breaking up of a valid marriage. That there are so many annullments granted in this country is one of the scandals of the American Catholic Church. I have little doubt that most of them are null and void. Joe Buehler
