I think that the particular permutation served as a clue as to which way to get out through the maze. A short Wizard dressed in oriental robes appears before you in a cloud of thick orange smoke. He declares: "Know then, mortal, that there are two major mazes in the Classic Adventure!" Suddenly, you see descriptions of both types floating in thin air in front of you: The first one is where all the maze descriptions are different, thus: YOU ARE IN A MAZE OF TWISTY LITTLE PASSAGES, ALL DIFFERENT. YOU ARE IN A MAZE OF LITTLE TWISTY PASSAGES, ALL DIFFERENT. YOU ARE IN A TWISTY MAZE OF LITTLE PASSAGES, ALL DIFFERENT. And so forth. It is a relatively easy task to get out of it, if you pay attention to where you go from each point. The vending machine of batteries for your lamp is located in this maze. The second type is the more devious one, where all descriptions are similar: YOU ARE IN A MAZE OF TWISTY LITTLE PASSAGES, ALL ALIKE. This one will require more work, and the Ariadne approach is recommended for finding an egress. The wizard makes a peculiar gesture with his hands and disappears. You feel enlightened. -- /* * * Otto J.
