Captive has the same type of interface as DM. The dungeon graphics and monsters are mechanically similar to DM in that you walk through a 3d dungeon with animated monsters. If you throw a ball, you see it fly out (and possibly bounce back). Even the doors have similar effects on monsters as DM doors. The interface is actually a little better than DM's. You can see all of the characters stats and belongings at once, although you still have the option of just looking at one character at a time. Character development is done by spreading experience points between attributes. You can improve each robot by buying new parts. Damage is recorded for each part of the robot, such as arms, legs, hands, head, chest, etc. In terms of game play, Captive is a cross between DM, BattleMech, and Starflight. I think it is easier than DM, but that might be because I have a lot of DM experience. There don't seem to be any puzzles like those in DM, but I'm only on the 3rd base so I don't know what else to expect. The only problem I have with the game is that it was tricky getting started. If you do what the manual says, you'll end up in a 3x1 hall with no apparent way out. It took me hours to figure out how to get out of that hall and into the first "dungeon." You can save up to nine games on one disk, but you can only restore when you are in your spaceship. The game works fine on my 2500/20, but I don't think it is HD installable. ---Todd -- Todd R.
