I suspect it is just a simple quality control measure-- when you are mass producing ROMS, you are bound to get a few bad ones, and it is best to know before you have put them on the circuit board. As an anti-clone measure, it would fail-- I understand that there are algorithms out there that let you figure out how to make a given CRC come out right, and checksums are trivial. -- Matthew T.
