I can't quite remember the specifics, but it's something to do with the fact that GDOS fonts can be in Motorola or Intel format (there's a flag in the font header somewhere to say which). AMCGDOS seems to support fonts in both formats, but both GDOS and G+PLUS only support Intel format fonts. The Gemini font used in the console window is probably in Motorola format.
