.hqx on Sumex indicates an Binhexed file. Binhexed means that the 8 bit codes
in a binary file are translated to ASCII characters, so that they can be 
transmitted using mail etc.

You can Un-Binhex them using Binhex4.0 (at sumex in util directory) or using
de Unbinhex option of Stuffit. Note that most .hqx files contain a Stuffit or
Packit archive, so you'll need Stuffit anyway.
