I've never actually looked at it, but I'd assumed the same; LaTeX only
makes
note in the .dvi file that there is another file to be included and it
is
dvi2ps which actually includes the file itself.  This is why it's also
annoying
that my dvimac (dvi to Apple ImageWriter) doesn't show the image
either.

Anyway, I've had success with gettint GhostScript V2.0 to recognize the
dvi2ps
output.  It also seems to recognize other stuff that kills the other
previewers
like PS images from Jef Poskanzer's pgmtops utility.  Last time I looked
I
think it was on gatekeeper.dec.com.
