Thanks to all those who responded so quickly to my dilemma: the short
answer to the problem of lost or forgotten password on root account in
ESIX is to boot off the floppies - when the second floppy finishes, it
asks if you want to recover. Answer yes, and it resets the password files
(and some others) to a virgin status while renaming all old files.
