Path: utzoo!utgpu!news-server.csri.toronto.edu!cs.utexas.edu!usc!zaphod.mps.ohio-state.edu!van-bc!rsoft!mindlink!a752 From: a752@mindlink.UUCP (Bruce Dunn) Newsgroups: comp.windows.ms Subject: WfW Bug - The Final Chapter Message-ID: <3893@mindlink.UUCP> Date: 21 Nov 90 02:13:52 GMT Organization: MIND LINK! - British Columbia, Canada Lines: 34 In chronological order: 1) I discovered that on my machine, in Word for Windows 1.1, in page view mode, that if I reduced the margins from the default value of 1.25 inches to 1 inch and then paged up to the head of the page I could reproducibly cause WfW to crash with an "unrecoverable application error". 2) I posted a description of this phenomenon, and asked if anyone could replicate it. 3) I received 6 E-mailed replies which stated that the persons involved could not reproduce the bug. 4) I posted a message concluding that the bug was probably a quirk of my machine and that I was dropping the subject. 5) I promptly received two additional messages from people who *could* reproduce the bug (Charles Bennett with an IBM PS/2 55SX, and Bill Hyde with an AT&T 6312 WGS (286). (I am using a Sanyo 386 DX). 6) I then received a message from Edward Thorp, in Microsoft Word for Windows development. He stated: "Yes, this is a bug. We also found it, but not until WfW 1.1 was out. It will be corrected in the next release." It's nice to see that Microsoft is apparently monitoring this USENET group, although it would have been even nicer for Microsoft to post information about known bugs. Thank you everyone for your participation in unravelling this mystery, even those who sent me mail without a signature line to indicate who they were (hint, hint). -- Bruce Dunn Vancouver, Canada a752@mindlink.UUCP
