The box would say "green" or "red" when the button is pushed. In fact, the button could just as well be the one that's now used to request a "walk" signal (we have lots of those in Chicago, don't know about the rest of the country). When you press the button, the box would announce whether it was currently OK to cross; if not, it would announce when the change occurs.
