Well, I'm not sure if this is any help or just a red herring.

Donald Michie has written several books in AI. The two that seem to match
are either

The Knowledge Machine: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Man
 by Michie and Rory Johnston (1985)

or 

On Machine Intelligence (1974, second edition 1986)
 by Michie.

I'm afraid I can help with a better match. Better carry out a search operation.
