You might also look at Interbase.  I like to think of it as the programmer's
database because it isn't chromed with a useless 4GL.  It does BLOB 
(Basic Large OBject) fields.  It has a straight-forward interface in QLI and
its 3GL language support is comprehensive.  The product is in Version 3 mode
right now.
