I saw an article back in 1987 about a scheme where you use your standard three views from drafting. You anchor two of the three dimensions in one view (window), and then move two one of the other two views (windows) to get the other dimension. I had been thinking about a scheme like this myself for a CAD package I wanted to write before ever seeing the article, but they published it first. Alas, I do not remember WHICH graphics journal I saw it in.
