If the lost file was created via vi, when they login
again, typing

vi -r

will list any files lost while editing.

The user can then

vi -r filename

to recover the file, save it locally in a filename
they like (foo,fred, fnord, ftc), enter elm, start
mail to someone, get into the editor and

:r filename

and there they are.
