If you don't change the memory sizing jumper on the A3000 motherboard, a
1Mx4 part will be treated as a 256Kx4 part.  I don't know the jumper number
offhand, it's 800-something, and it's mentioned in your A3000 manual (if you
don't feel like digging around for it, it's in the jumper list on the first 
schematic page in the back of the manual).
