I found this problem while trying to compile TeX Version 3.0 on a DecStation 5000/200 running Ultrix Version 4.0. I used the C Compiler Version 2.0 to compile the TeX Version 3.0 source code. I have since found out that this compiler has Optimizing problems. DEC has released a ``fix.'' They have a new C Compiler Version 2.1. If you buy FORTRAN, you get both FORTRAN and a new version of the C Compiler. Another way to fix the problem is to compile TeX Version 3.0 again but without the -O option. This worked!!! I have not tried re-compiling with the new C Compiler (Version 2.1) but others have and it seems to work fine. I do not know if DEC plans on releasing a new copy of the C Compiler. I received a copy because I purchased a new copy of FORTRAN for the RISC stations. I hope this helps. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - M. R.
