An easier way to fix this is to disconnect pin 22 (Ring Indicator)
of your serial cable.  If you are using an internal modem, this is
quite difficult :-)  Install xnx155b (available FREE from SCO or
your local distributor).  Among other things, it will fix the
"serial: ERROR: Garbage or loose cable on dev 0, port shut down"
error.
