Both of them depend on a program called Wnn. Wnn is a Kana->Kanji conversion server that runs on Unix systems and is available in the X11R4 distribution and another site in the US, clover.ucdavis.edu [128.120.57.1]. 1. There is a program in the contributed part of the X11R4 distribution called kinput. This program basically acts as an X11 front end for Wnn. Unfortunately, kterm is the only X11 program I know of that takes advantage of it. There are three patches to it, available from expo.lcs.mit.edu [18.30.0.212], that it's advisable to apply. They are located in the contrib/R4fixes/kinput/ directory on expo. 2. There is a program called Nemacs (Nihongo Emacs) also available from clover.ucdavis.edu. It is a modified GNU Emacs 18.55 that has an interface to Wnn and can read/write JIS, SJIS, and EUC encoded text. I think there are some Kanji capable X11 widgets from Sony available anonymous FTP from utsun.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp [133.11.7.250], though I don't know if they talk to Wnn. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- mleisher@nmsu.edu "I laughed.
