I would like a reference (journal article? Usenet ftp source?)
that allows me to look up basic information about university
Computer Science departments in America or world-wide.
Minimally, I would like basic information such as:

  o  number of tenured faculty, junior faculty, graduate students,
     and undergraduate students in the department,

  o  number and kinds of degrees awarded in recent years, and

  o  major research areas.

Ideally, I would like a reference that also provides more
detailed information, such as who the faculty are, major ongoing
research programs, the department's plans for the future (is it
growing aggressively?), university philosophy, the department's
academic reputation, its ties to other departments (mathematics,
electrical engineering, philosophy), it ties to industrial
research programs, etc. 

It is not too difficult to find this kind of information for any
*one* school.  Each school will send out literature that provides
some of the answers, and others can be found out by asking around
in one's own department.  This process is too time-consuming if
one wants to find this information for a score or so of schools,
or wants to be able to draw it up on demand for any particular
school.  Are there any references that help?
