   I have g++-1.37.0.

   What do I do to compile it on (1) PC 286
			     and (2) UNIX   ?

   On the UNIX system I have tried compiling the Makefile with cc but
   it cannot compile config.h.

You gave up on the wrong task.  You should give up on the 286.  G++
runs under dozens of standard UNIXs.  It doesn't run under XENIX as
far as I know.
