Unless you want to program an editor for the pleasure of writing the code, it would be much better worth your while to look again at the existing editors. I've used some myself, and if you are after configurability, and a small overhead I think you should take a look at /pc/pd2/qedit21.zip available by anonymous ftp from our site.
